Subjects

The English curriculum is mapped out for each year group with a focus on quality texts. Our ‘Take one book’ approach has been developed to ensure that the children read, enjoy and are inspired by a range of texts from different authors. We aim for our children to have an interest in books and read for enjoyment; to write with confidence, fluency and understanding; and to orchestrate a range of independent strategies to self-monitor and correct.

Our mathematics curriculum at Roseacre stems from a concrete, pictorial, symbolic approach and supports practical hands-on learning to embed key mathematical concepts. We use prior learning tasks to identify the needs of individuals/groups. This is followed by explicit teaching, opportunities for consolidation/developing independence and application activities.

The science curriculum is planned to progressively increase pupil’s substantive and disciplinary science knowledge.   We introduce the individual disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Biology and the interdependency of these disciplines within Science.  We teach one lesson each week.  The curriculum is all about discovery, exploration and the discovery of scientific concepts.  Investigation skills are a key part of the science curriculum and are given a high priority in lessons.

We teach history, geography, art and design technology using a concept based approach. Key concepts are introduced in the Early Years and then continue through years 1 – 6.  This allows our children to learn more and remember more as these key concepts are regularly revisited and children can gain a much deeper understanding of these subjects.  This in turn prepares them for the next stage in their education journey.

A specialist Sports Coach is employed to ensure that high quality PE is embedded across the school. The coach teaches PE as well as team teaching with other staff. The coach leads a wide variety of extra-curricular sports clubs. Swimming is taught in Year Four at Roseacre by specialist swimming teachers.

Music is taught using Charanga and this is enhanced in Year Three and Year Four with the wider opportunities scheme . This provides all children with the opportunity to learn to play a ukulele and guitar. The children then have the option to continue with peripatetic music lessons throughout Years Five and Six.

We aim for our children to independently use and apply computing skills to support and extend their learning. We have a key emphasis on learning skills for computing; these include programming, debugging and exchanging information. Our children are taught how to access information, evaluate its suitability, store it, share it with others and tailor it to meet their own needs. Children undertake e-safety sessions on topics such as cyberbullying or keeping information safe.  Alongside a full computing program of work we also use the Google suite of applications to develop the lifelong skills our children will need for their future..

RE is taught according to the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus. This allows children to learn about the six major world religions through different topics such as special books and places of worship. Children are given opportunities to develop their understanding of and respect for, local faith communities.

PSHCE is taught using our own Discovery Curriculum. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils and their understanding of the core values of our society are woven through the curriculum along with British Values.

As a school, we have chosen to teach French as our Modern Foreign Language. French is taught weekly in Key Stage  One and Two through a dedicated lesson per week. Theme weeks, whole school activities and opportunities within and outside school all enrich and develop the children’s learning. Our wide variety of extra-curricular clubs and events, extend these opportunities further.
