In Reception there are three classes;
- RSW – Mrs Watkinson and Mrs Stamford
- RR – Miss Ramsbottom
- RL – Miss Lewis
- Mrs Monaghan, Mrs Cliff and Miss Taylor support Reception as our teaching assistants.
- Mrs Sanderson is the PEO (pupil engagement officer) for Reception.
Mrs Chapman, Assistant Headteacher is the phase leader for Reception.
In Reception, the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum. This builds on the child’s previous experiences, with a strong focus on learning through play and exploring. We have high expectations and strive to meet the needs of every child. We aim to enrich children’s learning by providing stimulating and fun learning opportunities both structured and in our free choice continuous provision. The curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage is organised into seven areas of learning:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Literacy Development
- Mathematical Development
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
The Characteristics of Effective Learning describe factors which play a central role in a child’s learning and in becoming an effective learner. They underpin all seven areas of learning and development, representing processes rather than outcomes.
The Characteristics of Effective Learning are as follows:
- Playing and exploring
- Active learning
- Creating and thinking critically

During the Reception year, children’s progress towards the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) is carefully monitored. Each child has their own learning journey on Tapestry, which is shared with parents throughout the year.

We pride ourselves on having excellent relationships with our parents. These are some of the ways that we communicate effectively with parents and work in partnership with them:
- We have an open door policy for parents to speak to teachers everyday after school.
- We share the children’s successes and targets with parents.
- We share information about our topics and what we will be covering during each half term.
- We hold parent workshops to provide them with ideas about how to support their child’s learning at home.
- We send home learning logs and reading communication books.
- We invite parents into the classroom to participate in different curriculum based fun activities with their child.
Topics are selected during the year to take account of the children’s interests and what they would like to learn about. At the start of each topic we ask children what they already know about the topic and what they would like to find out about. Then, we use their ideas and questions to develop our topic outline.
Each Reception class takes part in a weekly P.E session on Wednesday morning.
Reading books are changed every Tuesday. Please make comments in the communication book when you have heard your child read at home. Children must bring their book bags into school daily.
Learning Logs will be sent home with the children on Wednesdays and must be returned to school on a Monday morning. This enables parents to find out what has been covered in class during that week and support or extend their child’s learning at home. Children share their learning logs in their Key Person groups on Mondays.
